5 STEPS TO GET YOUR POOL READY FOR SUMMER

While it’s nearly always summer weather here on the Gold Coast, your pool has probably been used less over the winter months. Now that the hot weather is back, it is tempting just to grab the kids, dig out the pool toys and jump in. But even though the water looks clean, it’s important to take time out to give your pool a bit more attention before summer hits.

  1. Check your pump is working

The pool pump is the heart of your pool’s filtration system. Pump performance is essential for meeting health and safety standards; and to keep your pool sparkling clean. The first step is to check the pump is working properly. If you are not sure, it’s a good idea to organise an equipment inspection with a local pool service and maintenance professional.

  1. Give your pool a spring clean

Robotic cleaners are great time saving devices, but it’s a good idea to give your pool a thorough clean and vacuum. This means giving the walls and floor a good brush and vacuum, including any hard to reach spots on stairs and corners. Empty the skimmer basket and have a general tidy up of the area to limit leaves and organic matter getting into the pool.

  1. Have your water tested

Clear water doesn’t always mean clean water. It’s important to check the chlorine and pH levels regularly – every two weeks for pools at home (resort pools test several times a day). A basic understanding of water chemistry will help you avoid adding chemicals you don’t need. If you aren’t sure what the numbers mean, just bring in a sample to us. We’re always happy to provide free, independent water testing and advice on pool chemicals and other balancing agents depending on your results.

  1. Check your safety equipment

As a pool owner, pool safety is your responsibility. Take the time to check fences, gates and child resistant locks are in good working order in accordance with state or territory legislation. Make sure you’ve got your CPR signs up, go over your pool rules as a family and don’t leave gates or doors propped open. Supervise and keep young children within arm’s reach.

  1. Set up a regular maintenance routine

Having a regular maintenance and cleaning schedule is the best way to spot problems early and protect your pool from equipment breakdowns or issues with water quality. Testing the water chemistry, checking the pump, cleaning the filter, emptying baskets are routine jobs that can save you buying unnecessary chemicals or expensive repairs.
